India 2029 Lok Sabha Election: Modi's 4th Term Test & What's At Stake
ByNorthUpdated
The 2029 Lok Sabha election decides whether the BJP's post-2014 dominance turns into a true four-term run or finally cracks. After 2024 forced Modi back into a coalition government for the first time since 2014, the real question is no longer "does the BJP win" — it's whether Modi himself runs at 78, whether the NDA holds without his face on the poster, and whether INDIA consolidates the 234-seat opposition bloc into a single governing alternative.
India's next Lok Sabha election is due by mid-2029. The formal schedule will only be published by the Election Commission a few months ahead. But the consequential questions are already in motion: (1) Modi turns 78 in 2028; the BJP has no formal age cap but its own internal convention has retired figures past 75 — succession inside the BJP is the central unresolved variable, with Amit Shah, Yogi Adityanath, and Devendra Fadnavis all positioned. (2) The 2024 result reset the field: BJP fell from 303 to 240 seats, lost its single-party majority, and now governs through TDP's Chandrababu Naidu and JD(U)'s Nitish Kumar — both regional parties with histories of switching sides. (3) The INDIA bloc finished with 234 seats but has never managed unified leadership; Rahul Gandhi's Congress is the largest piece (99 seats) but state-level partners (DMK, TMC, SP) keep their own ambitions. The real battleground states are Uttar Pradesh, Maharashtra, West Bengal, and Bihar — each with a regional dynamic that overrides the national narrative.
Three things will actually decide 2029. First: whether Modi runs again. He's given no signal of stepping aside, but the BJP has groomed multiple successors and the Hindu nationalist project does not depend on one person. Second: whether the NDA coalition holds — Naidu and Nitish Kumar have both jumped between alliances before, and a budget or federalism dispute between now and 2029 could collapse the majority. Third: whether INDIA can finally pick a single PM candidate. The 2024 result showed Congress + regionals can match the BJP on seats; the 2029 result depends on whether they can name a single face to put against the BJP's.
