Sweden's Social Democrats are the defining governing force of modern Swedish politics. Founded in 1889 out of the labor movement, the party built the folkhemmet model of universal welfare, strong unions, redistributive taxation, and state-backed social citizenship that made Sweden the classic global example of social-democratic government. Even when out of office, the party has usually set the terms of debate because so much of Sweden's institutional self-understanding was shaped in its long twentieth-century era of dominance.

Party History
The Social Democrats grew out of Sweden's late nineteenth-century labor movement and became the dominant governing party of the twentieth century, ruling for most of the period from 1932 onward. Under leaders such as Per Albin Hansson, Tage Erlander, and Olof Palme the party built the folkhemmet model of mass social insurance, union-state bargaining, and a broad middle-class welfare state. Its modern challenge has been preserving that legacy while adapting to migration debates, market reforms, European integration, and the fragmentation of the Swedish left.
