Cardinal Richelieu
French statesman and Catholic cardinal (1585–1642) who served as Chief Minister to King Louis XIII from 1624. He systematically dismantled the power of the French nobility, suppressed the Protestant Huguenot political organization, and crafted the balance-of-power diplomacy that shaped the Thirty Years' War and modern European statecraft.
