Josip Broz Tito
Yugoslav partisan leader and statesman (1892–1980) who resisted Nazi occupation, broke from Stalin in 1948, and ruled the multi-ethnic federation of Yugoslavia for 35 years. His independent communist path and leadership of the Non-Aligned Movement made him a global figure; his death in 1980 eventually preceded Yugoslavia's violent dissolution.
