Kwame Nkrumah
Ghanaian statesman (1909–1972) who led the Gold Coast to independence as Ghana in 1957, becoming the first prime minister and president of the first sub-Saharan African country to gain independence from colonial rule. His pan-Africanist vision and socialist policies were cut short by a military coup in 1966.
