It operates within the Dravidian political tradition that has dominated Tamil Nadu since the 1960s — a tradition built on Tamil linguistic and cultural identity, social-justice politics rooted in the anti-Brahmin Self-Respect Movement, and the displacement of Congress and later national parties from state politics.
