The office was constitutionally the apex of executive power but was effectively fused with the Ba'ath Party and military apparatus under the Assad family from 1971 to 2024. The position's future status is under negotiation as Syria drafts a post-transitional constitutional order.
Head of government of the Syrian Arab Republic, historically a largely ceremonial role subordinate to the presidency under Ba'athist rule. During the December 2024 transition, the post gained operational significance as the transitional government began administering national ministries.
